Dishwasher Troubleshooting Tips

All household electric appliances may at some point not operate effectively due to a lot of reasons. Your dishwasher could also fail to function at times, so first check the power supply. See if there is power supply to the dishwasher. If a fuse has blown or there has been a failed circuit breaker then power will not reach the dishwasher. Before checking, disconnect the wire from the machine that is plugged in to prevent any kind of mishap.

Check on the door switch. The door switch of your dishwasher is very important as it connects the main power supply to the dishwasher. If the door switch has any defect then the dishwasher will not function properly. To detect this defect the control panel cover or the inner lining of the door will have to be removed. If the door switch has a defect then it will have to be replaced with a new one.

If your dishwasher is old, its wiring may have turned brittle, this makes the wiring easily prone to getting burnt causing hindrances in the connection. If the wiring has turned old and brittle then the best thing to do for the proper functioning of your dishwasher is to change all the wiring along with the connectors.

If the selector and the timer switches are defective then the only alternative is to replace them, these switches cannot be repaired.

If your dishwasher is not cleaning the dishes properly or if you find that the supply of water to the machine is insufficient then you will have to check on the water inlet valve. These valves are present on the left hand side of the lower panel. This device consists of a rubber tube that is connected to the water supply and also has two wires. When there is a defect in this valve you will hear a knocking sound in the machine, which is otherwise called as the ‘water hammer', you will have to replace this whole valve.

To prevent overflows of water the dishwasher has float switches, these switches are made out of plastic and they generally rise with the level of water. They will require repairing or replacing if they are stuck in a high position.

To prevent debris and food particles entering the pump assembly the dishwashers have internal filters and if this filter gets blocked then the dishwasher will not clean the dishes thoroughly. These filters can be cleaned very easily and do not require any expertise. The dishwasher manual will have all the directions as to how the filter has to be cleaned. The newer models of dishwashers come with self-cleaning features.

The drain valves that are the internal filters have chances of getting blocked and this prevents adequate cleaning so you must clean them and put them back in the original position. Spray tubes or spray arms are either present on the upper or lower rack of the dishes, these spray holes may get blocked and cause hindrances in the cleaning process and have to be periodically cleaned.
